A young mother is quick to rebuke her kid from eating one too many candies. The observant father stops his teenage daughter when she reaches out for a second helping of the 'sinful' chocolate brownie. The best man does a rain check when his buddy stretches out to his forth large 'on the rocks' whiskey.
Candy, Pastry, Alcohol - the list is endless. It is filled by things which closely match the description of 'Heavenly' yet are termed 'deadly' !!!
How ironic can life get? It is almost like God is sneering at us!
Makes me wonder is good bad?
Truth be told - I was contemplating this thought as I watched a documentary on the life and world of rappers. It was a classic story of good guys turning bad!
I am no psychologist, but my mind came up with a possible explanation for this paradoxical situation. The child who is refused his candy automatically experiences an increased craving for it. To him the glass bottle safely tucked away in the top shelf of the kitchen filled with candies of every possible colour holds the coveted treasure. When he leans how to climb on chairs - no points for guessing where he reaches out to when mommie is taking a nap!
Unknown to the loving mother she is probably teaching him his first lesson on how to go after good things termed bad!
The sweetness of the candy only adds to his belief!
If i were to make a list of top ten things good for me, they would be: -
1. A glass of large vodka with lime cordial - Sitting in an open bar with the wind blowing across my face and Jimi Hendrix playing in the background! Ah - Bliss!!!
2. Strawberry cheesecake and a cup of skimmed cappuccino on a rainy day in an Italian cafe. Want to be waited upon by a French gay barista who is hotter than the coffee! So I know when i smile at him and he returns the smile, he is meaning " Sorry baby, I like boys - just like you! "
3. Silly chick flicks back to back on my Dell Inspiron 6200 laptop which is old enough to be my grandmother! But i cherish her like my first crush! Not to mention the big box of Pringles giving me company!
4. That house in Bangalore where parties where a recurring event every Friday night! People - new and old faces landed there to become a part of the celebration! What we celebrated for - remains a mystery. It was just an excuse to get together!
There was something about that house that was more than mere bricks and cement. The wide balcony- all those late night booze sessions!
3 A.M. talks with friends about life, friendship, ambition, goals!
I think its the house...
5. Late night drives! Unknown to my mom, me and my cousin used to drive all the way to ECR road late in the night. The cool breeze, jazz music in the car - enough to make me feel as if i was on la la land!
Policemen who stopped us were told crazy stories that were too good to be true! But the 50 rupee note always did the trick!
6. Dancing! That Irish pub in the US when I had just enough to feel the invisible bee buzzing inside my head! I was invited to dance by this 40 something lady. Her body looked like it had been plucked off a 20 year old but her face told a different story.
Was she a lesbian? Who cares!!!! I danced - We danced way past midnight!
When i left the pub in the wee hours of morning - She was no longer there...
But dancing to my hearts content on that day made me feel alive...
7. Eating Seetha patti's samayal. She never grows tired of telling me how fast she learnt cooking! She was cooking for a whole family at the age of 12 - wonder what i was doing when i was 12!!!
Whenever amma is away for a couple of days on official tours - Patti would start cooking the choicest of her recipes for me! Just me and Pattima - dinner will take a minimum of an hour. Those late night ice cream session were simply superb!
Her face glowing with joy as she scoops her fav mango ice cream and never fails to ask me for a refill. I miss those moments.
8. Drinking with my brother! I am not sure how my mom will react if she gets to know that her daughter got her son his first ever drink!
And now we are good drinking buddies. It doesn't mean we get drunk together every time we are together. But on those rare occasions when we do - it is a joy! I am glad i will have someone to drink scotch with when i turn sixty!!!
9. Marriage - Its good to be loved and to love!
10. Oh well - i guess i got enough of bad things in my list!!! But they are just too good to miss...
Cant think of anymore :)
